Mike Lazaridis at Mobile World Congress on Spectrum…

I wasn't able to attend MWC but Mr. Lazaridis' comments are right on the mark. As many folks in the telecom policy discussions know, we have a looming spectrum crisis on the horizon. The FCC is focused on freeing up 500 MHz to be auctioned over the next decade and it is a good start. However, the current appetite for mobile broadband will not be satisfied and ... read more

Berlusconi vs. Google: Will Italy Censor YouTube?

Hot on the heels of the Google vs. China censorship dispute, a new front in the showdown between state power and Internet freedom is opening in Italy. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government is pushing through new measures that would give the state control over online video content and force anyone who regularly uploads videos to obtain a license from the Ministry of Communications. The move is seen as yet another challenge to Google — owner of YouTube — which says the new rules would in effect force Internet service providers to police their own content.

Supreme Court Decision is Terrifying…

Excellent story at the source… This decision is really terrifying. Corporations and Unions now can unload their resources on campaigns. We need public financing of campaigns ASAP!

The Supreme Court’s Citizen United Decision Is Terrifying

If you’re looking for a concise way of capturing today’s Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, how about: “We are all royally, hopelessly fucked for the rest of recorded time”? It’s coarse, I know, but it really does the trick.

n one swoop, the court did away with nearly everything in federal campaign finance law, allowing corporations free reign to inject as much money as they jolly well please into federal campaigns. The decision completes what Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick calls “The Pinocchio Project,” in which the Court transforms “a corporation into a real live boy,” complete with personhood, free-speech rights and the unfettered opportunity to drown the body politic in a tidal wave of perverse incentives.Read more at www.huffingtonpost.com

Facebook - Privacy is overrated..

Interesting look by RWW’s Marshall Kirkpatrick at Facebook’s evolution on Privacy…

Facebook’s Zuckerberg Says The Age of Privacy is Over

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / January 9, 2010 9:25 PM / 52 Comments
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told a live audience yesterday that if he were to create Facebook again today, user information would by default be public, not private as it was for years until the company changed dramatically in December.
This is a radical change from the way that Zuckerberg pounded on the importance of user privacy for years.

This major reversal, backed-up by superficial explanations, makes me wonder if Facebook’s changing philosophies about privacy are just convenient stories to tell while the company shifts its strategy to exert control over the future of the web.

Tests see how snowmobiles run on high ethanol fuel

“Cars and trucks are being designed to run on these ethanol-rich fuels. But can a snowmobile?” Michigan Tech writer Marcia Goodrich asked in a story posted on the Houghton school’s Web site.
This winter, engineering assistant professor Scott Miers is conducting a study to see how snowmobiles can function with ethanol levels of 15 percent, compared to the current 10 percent, known as E10.

New Garmin App to find E85 stations…

Client news…

New Garmin App: Finding E85 Just Got Easier

The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today launched a new GPS application for Garmin users that maps out the location of E85 (85% ethanol/15% gasoline) stations all across the country. Using the Garmin navigation system, FFV owners can download station locations and program their device to guide them to upcoming E85 stations. FFVs are vehicles capable of running on gasoline/ethanol blends up to 85% ethanol. Owners should consult their owner’s manual to see if their vehicle is E85-compatable.
To download this Garmin application, visit www.ChooseEthanol.com for step-by-step instructions. There, consumers can download individual state data, a combination of states, or national data directly to their computer and then to their Garmin devices. Directions for installing this point of interest (POI) data are now available.
